Sir Keir Starmer visited Harlow today to reaffirm his pledge to do everything he can to hold the government to account on both the economic and health crises .
During a visit to gear manufacturers Beard & Fitch, Keir highlighted Harlow’s growing unemployment and called the Prime Minister’s attempts to blame care workers for deaths in care homes as “shameful”.
He also used the opportunity to hit out at government plans to scrap free hospital parking for NHS workers.
He also maintained he was “here to listen”, as staff told him of their growing concern over their future business prospects in this growing economic crisis.
He said the government’s Job Retention scheme needs to be “targeted at those jobs that won’t be retained unless the government supports them”. Quoting the chancellor as admitting there are “some dead weights” in the scheme; Keir said “we can’t afford dead weights when people’s jobs are at stake.”
